Alibaba Qwen Releases Qwen-Audio-3.1-Realtime: Full-Duplex Voice Model That Decides When to Speak

Alibaba's Qwen team has released Qwen-Audio-3.1-Realtime, a full-duplex voice model capable of simultaneously listening and speaking while also reasoning about when it is appropriate to interject or remain silent. Unlike turn-based voice models that wait for a speaker to finish, full-duplex models can handle interruptions and natural conversational overlap, which is a critical requirement for real-time voice agents and assistants. The model is trained to make explicit decisions about speech timing rather than relying on VAD heuristics, which should reduce the awkward silences and false starts common in current voice AI products. Developers building voice-first applications — customer service bots, real-time translation tools, or voice-controlled agents — should evaluate this as a potential upgrade over existing solutions. The release continues Qwen's pattern of competitive open or accessible model drops that challenge Western lab dominance in specific modalities.
