Linkup Research Releases SPARSEUP: Open-Source 149M-Parameter Sparse Embedding Model

Linkup Research has open-sourced SPARSEUP, a 149M-parameter sparse embedding model designed to provide high-quality retrieval performance with the efficiency advantages of sparse representations. Sparse embedding models produce vectors with most values set to zero, enabling faster search and lower storage costs compared to dense embeddings while remaining competitive on retrieval benchmarks. For developers building RAG pipelines, search systems, or semantic retrieval at scale, SPARSEUP offers an open-source alternative to proprietary sparse retrieval options with a relatively small parameter footprint suitable for self-hosted deployments. The 149M scale makes it practical to run on commodity hardware or in cost-sensitive cloud environments. Its open-source availability means developers can fine-tune it on domain-specific corpora, which is a significant advantage over closed embedding APIs.
