Security Researchers Used Claude to Successfully Hack Into OpenAI

Security researchers demonstrated a successful intrusion into OpenAI's systems by leveraging Anthropic's Claude as part of the attack chain, in a disclosure being called the HEIF Heist. The incident is significant because it shows AI models can be weaponized as active components in offensive security operations, not merely as passive tools for writing scripts. For developers and security teams, this raises the bar on AI-assisted threat modeling: adversaries can now use frontier models to accelerate and sophisticate attacks against AI infrastructure specifically. Teams building on or adjacent to major AI platforms should treat AI-assisted adversarial probing as a realistic and near-term threat vector and audit their own exposed surfaces accordingly.
